No, We're Not at the Post Office (Here's How to Actually Find Us) - Green Gable Alpacas

No, We're Not at the Post Office (Here's How to Actually Find Us)

The frustration is real.

And we’ve heard it all.  From folks who arrive flustered after a way-too-scenic detour, to guests stepping out of their car laughing and saying, "Well... that was one heck of an alpaca chase."

Dozens of times each season, people arrive at the farm after struggling to find us.

It’s not you. It’s not (just) your GPS. It’s a perfect storm of rural PEI quirks, tech hiccups, and one postal code that covers a huge chunk of Prince County. We’ve had guests show up in neighbours’ driveways, loop endlessly through Tyne Valley, or stand bewildered in front of the post office wondering where the heck the alpacas are.

So let’s clear a few things up and make sure you find us on the first try.

Why GPS Gets It Wrong Around Here

We hear it all the time:

  • "But my GPS is top-of-the-line."
  • "I just bought this car!"
  • "It’s never failed me before!"

Totally fair.  But even high-end systems (and the fanciest phones) can’t always keep up with the quirks of rural PEI.

One Postal Code = A Whole Lot of Wrong Turns

Our postal code covers a huge area. According to Canada Post, there are 532 (!) physical addresses that share it.

Most often, if your GPS is routing based on postal code alone, it will take you to the local post office, which, while charming, does not have alpacas. From there, you are still 10 minutes away from our farm.

Hint: From the Post Office, head east on the 12 (Dillon's Convenience will be on your left).  Follow the 12 to Port Hill corner (about 4km) and turn right to stay on the 12. We're about 3km down on the right hand side.

Some Roads Just... Don’t Exist (On Maps)

Many Island roads are local knowledge. Some are seasonal, some are private lanes, and some simply don’t show up on commercial mapping data.

Spotty Cell Signal

PEI is beautiful... and sometimes that beauty comes with dead zones. If you lose service mid-trip, and your app didn’t pre-load the route? Good luck explaining that to Google.

But My GPS Is Good, Right?

Probably! The GPS chip itself is rarely the problem. It’s the navigation system, which is the app or in-dash software that interprets your location and plots a route, that gets confused.

Here’s what they use:

System Map Provider
Google Maps & Waze Google’s own live data
Apple Maps Apple’s proprietary maps (rural Canada = hit or miss)
Garmin / TomTom Require manual updates
In-dash car systems Often use pre-installed maps that go stale over time

So yes, your luxury SUV might think it's smarter than it is.... if the maps haven’t been updated since 2021.

OK, So How Do I Actually Get to Green Gable Alpacas?

Glad you asked. Here's the no-nonsense way to find us:

✅ Use This Google Maps Link (Not Just the Postal Code)

CLICK HERE FOR THE ACTUAL LOCATION PIN
Don’t search by postal code. Don’t search by "Green Gable" alone (you’ll end up in Cavendish). Use this exact pin and you’ll land in the right place, where the pastures are full of alpacas, not mailboxes.

✅ Download Directions Before You Leave

If you’re heading out from a cottage or campground with Wi-Fi, take a couple of minutes to download your Google Maps route. You’ll thank yourself later.

✅ Use a Paper Map!

Those free PEI tourism maps you’ll find at every Visitor Information Centre, point of entry, and probably your accommodations? They’re actually really good. We’re on them. They show the roads that exist, and none that don’t.

Bonus: Ask your host to point out the farm on the map before you leave. Most of them know exactly where we are, and can save you a detour.

✅ Watch for Signs Near the Farm

One thing you might notice while exploring PEI: our beautiful landscapes aren’t blocked by big, flashy billboards... and I love that about our little Island. It keeps the scenery pristine, but it does mean signage can be limited.

All directional signs are regulated by the Department of Transportation, and each business is allowed a maximum of four with their name. That’s it. And considering many operators (like us) are a few turns off the main highway, those four signs don’t always show up where you'd most want them to.

So yes, we do have signs... but depending on where you're coming from, they might not match your GPS turn-for-turn.

Keep an eye out. If you spot alpacas, you're in the right place. If you end up at the post office wondering where the farm is... you’re close, but no cigar.

✅ Worst-Case Scenario? Call Us

Our phone number is in your booking confirmation. We’re always happy to talk you in (preferably not while you’re driving and cursing at your dashboard).

Hint: Put our number in your phone before you head out (902)-303-0647

TL;DR - How to Find Us Without Losing Your Mind

  • 📍 Use our Google Maps pin
  • 🧭 Keep a paper tourism map in the car
  • 📶 Download directions before you leave
  • 📞 Don’t be afraid to call if you’re really stuck
  • 🚫 Don’t trust the postal code

Getting here shouldn’t be the hard part. But if it’s a little adventure along the way? Well, that’s just part of our Island charm.  Enjoy the drive and give us a call to let us know you're running a little late.

Once you arrive, we promise... Downie and the rest of the herd will make it worth it.

See you soon (at the right address).
